Product test: Blackbox C14 Noise Cancelling Earphones

Here begins what is hopefully the first in a long line of (unofficial) product reviews. Inspired by my (sometimes) good friend TK. I figure I can offer a Wellington perspective on products that no southerner could.

First up are the Blackbox C14 earphones. I heard about these via Rod Dury’s blog. I’d been after some noise canceling headphones for a while, and initially went in and tried out the Bose quietcomfort3 at the Bose store in Wellington - all in all not a pleasant experience. The headphones were great–brilliant, even if the audition was a bit staged with their custom sound shell that you listen to them in. But the guy selling them has a lot to learn about customer service and selling in general. From the get-go he was super pushy, asked me if I had my credit card ready, and just came across as a real money hungry monkey. I’m sure they do well, but their selling methods don’t float my boat.

Anyway, this review isn’t about the Welly Bose store’s bad salesmanship, but it did inspire me to buy some noise canceling headphones - just not from the Bose store, and not at the inflated price they were trying to flick them off at - so i stumbled across the Blackbox offerings.

In the coming weeks, i’ll post a full review but here’s the initial thoughts as they come to mind…

Nice package design, quite big ear pieces, where’s the supplied battery…, don’t tell me there’s no supplied battery, oh there it is, which is left and right, hiss like a DNR tape when you have NR turned on but no music, cuts out office din, people sound very far away, once music turned on - thats really all you hear, worried about loud farts that you cant hear, don’t work without NR turned on (sad) - you’d think they would be normal earphones with NR turned on, but it seems they’ve been designed to only work with it on, volume control should be a dial or at last easier to move.

Full review to come in a few weeks.

Listening to: Black Betty, Ram Jam
